We Caught Up For An Inconvenient Conversation

I recently caught up with Edwin Koh 许胜杰, the VP of Group Learning at Lazada, over a cup of hot chocolate.

As he could not attend our #riseup conference, which we concluded recently, I decided to bring #riseup to him instead 🙂

While we have the convenience of catching up over zoom, we decided to make time to meet in person.

Edwin is a leader with a heart for helping others to succeed.

Having experienced multiple roles in HR, he decided to make learning and development his core career, a space where he can directly impact people.

#𝟭 𝗙𝗢𝗖𝗨𝗦 𝗢𝗡 𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗖𝗔𝗡 𝗗𝗢, 𝗡𝗢𝗧 𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧’𝗦 𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗩𝗘𝗡𝗜𝗘𝗡𝗧.

In his earlier years, he was given a list of occupations that he couldn’t do due to his slight issue with identifying colours.

Instead of conveniently focusing on what he couldn’t do, he started focusing on what he could do, no matter how inconvenient it might be.

Today, he loves designing, delivering and orchestrating learning strategies and training where the human impact is the greatest.

He did not settle for anything less just because people “conveniently” told him he couldn’t.

We need to challenge the status quo in our new world constantly.

After all, the world does not evolve conveniently.

#𝟮 𝗔𝗥𝗘 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗔 𝗣𝗢𝗦𝗜𝗧𝗜𝗩𝗘 𝗥𝗘𝗕𝗘𝗟 𝗢𝗥 𝗔 𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗩𝗘𝗡𝗜𝗘𝗡𝗧 𝗗𝗢𝗘𝗥?

We bounced off multiple ideas on the various exciting possibilities we can do today.

And yes, we need new courage to take hold of the opportunities thrown our way.

The courage to LEARN again. The courage to GROW again. The courage to SHOW UP again.

To disrupt and create new opportunities requires us to tap into that little rebel in us.

A Positive Rebel knows that convenient thoughts will not lead us to any breakthrough.

Guess we will see more positive rebels making a difference in the new world we live in today.

While we prefer the convenience of zooming up in person, to stay in touch is to meet in person.

Ironically, it has become “inconvenient” to meet in person now that we have an easy way out with online conversation.

The need for humans to support other humans has not changed.

With the increase in a hybrid working environment, this also means we need even more, not less, human support and encouragement,

Online is a convenient way to get things done, but certainly not the way to live a life.

Out of Sight, Out of Mind, Out of Touch.

Sometimes, when things start to get inconvenient, it is perhaps sending a message that it is time we need to do more of it, like having coffee in person.

This is Joseph, signing off.

May You 𝗧𝗥𝗔𝗡𝗦𝗙𝗢𝗥𝗠, 𝗙𝗟𝗢𝗨𝗥𝗜𝗦𝗛 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗦𝗣𝗘𝗥 in the Brand New World.
