Stop Using Authenticity As An Excuse

A friend at work shares that she receives blunt feedback from her boss.

She was offended not by the feedback but by her boss’s tonality and directness.

During the conversation, the boss kept saying she was just being authentic and nothing personal.

She shared that she could have done it moreย ๐—ง๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐˜๐—ณ๐˜‚๐—น๐—น๐˜† ๐——๐—ถ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฐ๐˜,ย and she would gladly receive the feedback and take action.

She lost the respect of her boss, and her boss had lost the trust of a member in the name of authenticity.

Being authentic does not give the person the right to speak whatever is on their mind.

Venting is not feedback; people tend to label the venting as โ€œauthenticโ€ and destroy the conversation.

+ If we want someone to embrace feedback so that they can improve,

+ Then, we need to embrace the spirit of tactfully directing.

+ It is possible to give input tactfully so that at the end of the day,
